UAE Establishment Card (Immigration Card): A Founder's Guide

Quick answer

An establishment card, also called an immigration card, registers your company with the immigration authorities so it can sponsor residence visas. You apply after the trade licence is issued, through ICP or, for Dubai, GDRFA. It must stay valid to issue or renew visas. Confirm current fees and requirements with the authority.

What an establishment card does

The establishment card links your company to the immigration system. Without it, the company cannot sponsor investor, partner or employee residence visas. It records the company's details and authorised signatory, and its validity usually tracks the trade licence.

Who issues it

Establishment cards are issued by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) for most emirates, and by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs Dubai (GDRFA) for Dubai-based companies. Free zones often submit the application on the company's behalf through their own service centres.

Documents usually requested

  • Valid trade licence.
  • Memorandum or articles of association, where applicable.
  • Passport, visa and Emirates ID copies of the owner or signatory.
  • Tenancy or lease evidence for the premises.
  • Completed application form submitted through an approved channel.

Where it fits in your setup timeline

The usual order is licence → establishment card → entry permit → medical test → Emirates ID → residence visa stamping. A delay at the establishment card stage holds up every visa behind it, so ask your provider whether it is included in the package and who files it.

Renewal and keeping it valid

Renew the establishment card alongside the trade licence. An expired card can block visa renewals and new hires, and may lead to penalties set by the authority. Update it whenever the signatory, company name or licence details change.

Common delays

  • Licence details not matching passport spellings.
  • Missing or expired tenancy evidence.
  • Signatory not yet holding UAE residency where it is required.
  • Applying before the licence is fully issued.

Treat the establishment card as part of your licence package, not an afterthought.

Frequently asked questions

Is an establishment card the same as an immigration card?
Yes. Both terms describe the company's registration with immigration authorities so it can sponsor visas.
Do I need an establishment card without visas?
It is mainly needed to sponsor visas. Some providers include it by default; ask whether it is required for your setup.
What happens if the establishment card expires?
Visa issuance and renewals can be blocked and the authority may apply penalties. Renew it with your licence.
