Hong Kong vs UAE: headline tax rates

The UAE's 9% corporate tax applies only above AED 375,000 of taxable profit. Whether Hong Kong still taxes your profits depends on where they are sourced, not on where the company is registered.

Attesting Hong Kong documents: the usual steps

  1. 1. Hong Kong notary public

Certifies copies of your passport, degree or Hong Kong company documents.

  2. 2. High Court apostille

The High Court Registry of the Hong Kong Judiciary issues the apostille on public and notarised documents.

  3. 3. UAE mission check

Ask the UAE Consulate or your setup provider whether embassy legalisation is still required for your document type.

  4. 4. UAE MOFA

Final attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs once the documents arrive in the UAE.

Moving from Hong Kong: tax, treaty and banking

  • Hong Kong uses a territorial system: profits sourced outside Hong Kong are generally not taxed there, but source rules are fact-specific. Get written advice before moving trading activity.
  • To claim treaty relief you usually need a UAE tax residency certificate, which depends on residence and substance in the UAE.
  • UAE banks ask for your trade licence, proof of address, source of funds and a business plan. Our bank account guide explains what helps approval.

Questions Hong Kong founders ask

Can a Hong Kong resident own 100% of a UAE company?
Yes. Free zone companies allow 100% foreign ownership, and most mainland activities now do too. Regulated activities may need extra approvals.
Does a UAE company change my Hong Kong profits tax position?
Hong Kong taxes profits sourced in Hong Kong. Where profits are sourced and where the business is run decide your position, so take advice from a Hong Kong tax adviser.
Is there a tax treaty between Hong Kong and the UAE?
Yes. Hong Kong and the UAE have a Comprehensive Double Taxation Agreement. Relief usually requires a tax residency certificate from the relevant tax authority.
How much does a UAE free zone licence cost?
Live packages on Business Setup AE start from AED 4,888. Your final price depends on activity, visas and office space.
